Wastewater Characterization, Compañía Cervecera de Nicaragua (Toña), Central America

Central American Brewery

Central American Brewery

A Nicaraguan brewery was required to meet new wastewater discharge regulations.  A wastewater characterization study, a water audit, and a source-emissions testing (i.e. brew kettles, bottle washers, fermentation tanks, etc.) program was performed. The information was used to model the emissions from the facility based on a 10-year production improvement and expansion plan. The in-house process recommendations for waste/wastewater management included yeast recovery technologies, reduction in water usage, reuse of chemicals and water segregation.  The study was used to identify the wastewater treatment requirements overtime, and the information was used in a feasibility study for wastewater treatment scenarios. This project was performed for the brewery and partially funded through the Canadian International Development Agency´s Industrial Cooperation Program (CIDA Inc).
