Remediation of Soil and Groundwater | Underground Storage Tanks in California

Gas Station

We have extensive experience remediating soil and groundwater sites impacted by underground storage tanks (UST), UST decommissioning, soil excavation, tank and soil disposal, groundwater monitoring programs, health risk assessment, and closure support.

Tank and Contaminant Source Removal
Tank extraction services include permitting tank extraction with the corresponding regulatory agency (e.g., the Fire Department, County), tank pullout supervision, project management, sampling and reporting, and disposal of contaminated soil. We perform tank extractions in compliance with air monitoring rules and regulations.

Soil and Groundwater Remediation
To fully delineate chemically impacted soil and groundwater, we work with professional geologists and hydrogeologists. Once the contamination is delineated, we use cost-effective technologies to remediate soil and groundwater. We have extensive experience in remediating sites impacted with gasoline related compounds and chlorinated solvents. Our soil remediation experience includes the use of technologies such as advanced oxidation systems, offsite thermal treatment, and soil vapor extraction. To remediate impacted groundwater, we use in-situ remediation systems and pump-and-treat systems.

Project Management
Our project management experience with remediation projects includes both large and small sites with impacts to groundwater, surface water, and indoor health risks. Many of the sites we have managed involve very complex environmental issues requiring the expertise of geologists, hydrogeologists, civil engineers, and toxicologists. We use some of the best project management tools in the industry to track progress and budgets under several available contracting mechanisms including: time-and-materials, fixed-price and guaranteed-fixed-price. Some of our most complex sites have been outsourced through closure using our guaranteed-fixed-price remediation contract mechanism.

Regulatory Support
Regulatory support includes meeting with the lead regulatory agency staff and providing support with applicable laws and regulations. Our regulatory support services include processing applications, preparing remedial action plans, updating regulators on remediation progress, health risk assessments, reporting, and closure support. Our project experience includes projects overseen by the California Regional Water Quality Control Board (CRWQCB), the California Department of Toxic Substances (DTSC), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the Ontario Ministry of Environment (MOE).

LUFT Fund Support and Description of Available Funding
We have worked extensively with State of California – LUFT sites in supporting site investigation and remediation, while preparing invoices that meet the specifications outlined by the State’s cost reimbursement guidelines. We can offer assistance with other sources of funding such as DTSCs Cleanup Loans and Environmental Assistance to Neighborhoods (CLEAN) Program. This is a State of California funded loan program that provides low-interest loans of up to $100,000 to conduct preliminary endangerment assessments or provides low-interest loans of up to $2.5 million for the cleanup or removal of hazardous materials where redevelopment is likely to have a beneficial impact on the property values, economic viability, and quality of life of a community.

Closure Support
We have successfully implemented remediation technologies and strategies to close contaminated sites, including UST sites. Our closure support has been successfully applied to sites with complicated technical, remediation, and regulatory issues. Complicated issues include impacts to aquifers with municipal uses, oxygenate contaminated groundwater, and aquifers and sites with multiple contaminants.
